Schuyler County Man Headed to Jail for Failing to Pay $30K in Child Support
WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (WENY) - A Schuyler County Man will go in jail for failing to pay nearly $31,000 in child support that spanned four years.
According to Schuyler County Attorney Steven Getman, the man, whose name was not released, willfully violated a prior court order. He failed to pay nearly $31,000 for his two children since at least November 2018.
As a result, the man was sentenced to 60 days in jail during a family court appearance on July 6th.
Assistant County Attorney Vinton Stevens the man was recently caught on a criminal court warrant in Chemung County, and he was already facing extradition to another state for a separate criminal prosecution.
The man paid nearly $2,000 of the $31,000 that was ordered by the court.
Stevens also says the man could be released from jail if he pays the full amount of child support.
"These jail sentences send a message that will hopefully resonate," Getman said. "Under New York State law, parents who willfully fail to obey court orders of child support can be sentenced to up to six months for contempt of court."
