Moving Wall Opening Ceremony
ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- Today, a traveling tribute, the Moving Wall arrived in Eldridge Park. The wall pays tribute to those who lost their life in the Vietnam War.
The Moving Wall will be on display in Eldridge Park, beginning today and lasting for the next five days. The opening ceremony kicked off the arrival of the wall.
There are Vietnam veterans that may never get the opportunity to see wall, based in our nation's capital. The wall gives people an opportunity to mourn those who lost their lives, on their own terms.
Dan Delany is a committee chairman for the Moving Wall. He is also a Vietnam Veteran and served in the 1st Calvary Division for the United States Army. Delany said the Moving Wall would not be possible without the support and love from the community.
“The wall itself...I can't describe it,” he said. “I will just close for now and just tell you people thank you, thank you, thank you for being part of this ceremony.”
Vietnam Veteran Dennis Wolfe Sr. received the award for Veteran of the Year, presented by Senator Tom O'Mara. During acceptance speech, Wolfe Sr. honored those who lost their lives in the Vietnam War.
“Yeah, the World War II boys were the greatest generation, there's no doubt about it,” he said. “But we weren't far behind...and as you look back behind me, and Senator O'Mara...who I dearly thank, you can see all these names on this wall.”
The wall will be open all day and night for the next five days for people to come and pay their respects.
