Horseheads American Legion to host retirement ceremony for worn flags Tuesday

Horseheads, NY (WENY)-- Flag Day is Tuesday, June 14th, and the American Legion in Horseheads is holding a ceremonial flag burning to properly dispose of worn and torn flags.
Bob Yacubic is the commander of the Horseheads American Legion. He says that there is no other way to dispose of a flag, besides burning it respectfully.
"Everything we have read states that the way to get rid of a flag that has been torn, is to burn it properly." Yacubic said. "Not anybody ripping it up, tearing it up or throwing it in the garbage."
According to the National Flag Foundation, the U.S. Flag Code says when 'The flag, when it is in such a condition that is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning."
If you have a flag that needs to be retired, the Legion has a drop box right in front of the building, where you can put the flag. Yacubic says that you can also come by the Legion Tuesday to drop it off.
The Legion only burns flags once a year, on Flag Day. You can drop off your flags throughout the year.
If you are in need of a new flag, the Legion does sell them to the public.
"We have flags. We just picked up 25 of the 3x5s and we have various sizes. Prices are posted out by the bar and is open to the general public or those that want to buy one." Yacubic explained.
The event starts at 6 PM tomorrow evening, in the back of the American Legion.
