Boater Finds Suspected Human Remains in Chemung River, Investigation Underway

CHEMUNG, NY (WENY) -- The Chemung County Sheriff's Office, Elmira Police Department, and New York State Police are working to identify a suspected jaw bone found by a boater last month.
According to Elmira Police, on May 11th, a boater reported to authorities that they had found what was believed to be a human jaw bone in the Chemung River, just east of the town of Chemung. At the time, a search of the area recovered no additional bones.
The jaw bone is currently undergoing testing at the state crime laboratory, with DNA results expected in the coming weeks.
On June 9th, the New York State Police Underwater Recovery Team, NYSP investigators, Chemung County Sheriff's Office, and Elmira Police searched the area in an attempt to find additional human remains.

Elmira police say there are several missing person cases open in the region. One case open with the Elmira Police Department is of Matthew Barber, who was last seen in November of 2020. It is unknown at this time if the remains are that of Barber, or another individual from the area.
Barber is a reported missing vulnerable adult, who was last seen on November 1st, 2020. He is described as a black male, 5'06" tall, weighing 175 pounds. According to the missing person report with the Division of Criminal Justice, Matthew is disabled and may have been in need of medical attention, and may have traveled to Pennsylvania.
