HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (WENY)--The race for New York's 23rd Congressional District is taking a turn and heating up. Two new candidates have thrown their hats into the race while two other candidates have bowed out.

With the race for the newly drawn 23rd Congressional District underway, there are two Republican candidates campaigning for it. Businessman Carl Paladino, and New York State GOP Chairman Nick Langworthy.

The new 23rd district map shows the district is losing Tompkins county but gaining a portion of Erie County. Erie County is an area where Businessman Carl Paladino is from. He served in the Army, and a graduate of Syracuse Law School is running to represent the 23rd. He had a petition signing at Hamlet Delight in Horseheads on Wednesday afternoon.

"We are here to work on petitions so that I can become a candidate for the 23rd congressional district which this is a part of," Paladino said.

If he wins, he'll bring the much-needed change he said.

"We are rocking and rolling. We have a really nice following, we've secured many petitions more than the requirement," Paladino said.

He explains, that he decided to run after 27th District Congressman Chris Jacobs, who was running for the 23rd, dropped out a few days ago. He says friends and family were a big factor.

"They said Carl you've got to run for the 23rd so I said alright I'll do that and then when Chris Jacobs decided to step out of the race I said I'm probably a perfect fit," Paladino said.

New York state Republican committee GOP Chair Nick Langworthy has jumped into the race for the newly drawn 23rd district and joins Paladino as a candidate.

Mike Sigler dropped out of the race and is no longer. He said in a Facebook post, "the lines have changed dramatically and while I'm still a solid candidate it puts a significant barrier in the way and robs me of several of my main arguments for running in the first place," Sigler said.
