ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- A new Sunday church service was offered at The Park Church in Elmira. The church’s congregation worshiped a little differently in honor of Pride Month with special appearances from two drag queens.

This church worships with a progressive pulpit. Reverend James Brinn said the church wanted to try something new to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community with a “Worship is a Drag” Sunday service.

“Why not a drag show for the start of Pride Month,” he asked.

Brinn's sermon’s message was “God loves everyone.” Brinn said his caring congregation wants to make everyone feel like there is a special place for them in the church, including drag queens.

President of the Park Church's council, Jenny Monroe, said the church's message is to be open and affirming. She said that message has been with the church's congregation for over 20 years.

“The affirming piece is the important part...that means that we affirm your choices of gender identity, or sexual preference, or who you love, or what you talk about, how you dress...all those things,” she said. “We affirm who you want to be at church.”

Elmira city council member, Brent Stermer, said Park Church is a strong pillar in his life. He said he is proud to be a part of a progressive church that supports everyone in the LGBTQ+ community.

The drag show was a new spin to the service. Stermer hopes to see the church host this type of "Worship is a drag" service again in the future.

“It was fun...a lot of people enjoyed it...God loves everyone and that is a beautiful thing.”

Reverend Brinn is sure the drag queens will make another Sunday service appearance in the future. For more information about the church, click this link.
