Steuben Co. Legislator refuses to resign after accepting plea deal in sex trafficking case
CORNING, N.Y. (WENY) -- A Steuben County legislator is refusing to resign after accepting a plea deal in a sex trafficking case.
According to WENY-TV's media partner The Star Gazette, Legislator Steven Maio of Corning pleaded guilty to soliciting prostitution after being originally charged by New York State Police in August 2020. Soon after, a Steuben County grand jury indicted the Democrat for enterprise corruption in connection with allegations of sex trafficking and other crimes in Steuben and Chemung counties.
Since his arrest, Maio faced multiple calls for resignation from both sides of the political spectrum, with the Steuben County Democratic Committee recently renewing its call for him to step down. However, with his current term expiring at the end of 2023, Maio has defended his decision to keep his seat.
According to Steuben County District Attorney Brooks Baker, Maio faces three years of probation as well as mandatory counseling under the terms of his plea agreement. He is set to be sentenced June 6.
