Rally for Ukraine held at Wisner Park
Elmira, NY (WENY)-- A group of protesters held a rally at the corner of Wisner Park, in a continuing effort to support Ukraine, as the conflict with Russia continues.
The group has rallied at Wisner Park since the invasion began over three weeks, meeting every Monday.
One of the protesters, Donald Kakretz, has a deeper reason for protesting. His wife lives in Ukraine, and is now a refugee in Warsaw, Poland.
He says she left the city of Kharkiv, after she lost power and water. He says that she then endured a 38 hour train ride to safety, sharing a cabin with 22 other fleeing citizens. Kakretz says she then had to travel another 12 hours to the Poland border, with an additional two hour wait to get into the country.
Kakretz says that these rallies are important, as it shows the country that they have support from people all around the world.
"Just let the people know, you know, just to let them see how much support we got. We got a lot of support," Kakretz said.
Kakretz and other members of the groups will be on the corner of Wisner Park every Monday until the invasion is over.
They say that the community is welcome to come to these rallies, and help show their support for a free Ukraine.
