The Glass Snow Family returns to the Corning Museum of Glass for another winter season.

The installation has been at the museum for over a decade. Glass maker George Kennard discussed the creation process behind his installation ‘Glass Snow Family.’

Kennard has been working at the museum for over 20 years. His installation is proudly displayed year after year.

He says he looked to a simpler approach for his installation’s design.

“I was just thinking about how kids draw and I just sat down and sketched out a rough sketch of a snow family and talked to the team about it,” he said. "We basically decided how many people we were going to need to make this project.

The snow people stand at six feet tall. Kennard sought out a lot of help to make his dream project a reality.

“They're very large, blown objects so you need a pretty big team for that,” he said. “I think we had six people on the team to make these pieces.”

The idea for the snow family came to him on a car ride after a huge snow storm had hit Corning in 2011.

“We had a big snow storm and I was driving to work and I was thinking about taking the day off and making a snowman,” he said. “I thought 'Wow, we can do this at work.'”

Kennard explained the installation is a classic work of art. People of all ages can enjoy it.

“I would describe this installation as family-friendly that kids can understand,” he said.

Kennard encourages people to make a trip to the museum and see the installation, especially because it is a wintertime favorite at the Corning Museum of Glass.

"It will put a smile on their face,” he said. “I mean, who doesn't like...snow people?”
