ALBANY, N.Y. (WENY) -- The New York State Department of Health has identified 40 hospitals that have met the state’s threshold for “high risk regions" or low capacity facilities, according to new figures released Saturday. That is an increase in 19 hospitals since last check on Jan. 4. These hospitals now mush stop non-essential and non-urgent elective procedures for a minimum of two weeks.

No medical facilities in the central Southern Tier of New York were identified in the report, but the closest hospitals identified are the Guthrie Cortland Medical Center and the Olean General Hospital.

"We will use every available tool to help ensure that hospitals can manage the COVID-19 winter surge," said Acting State Health Commissioner Dr. Mary T. Bassett. "We cannot return to the early months of the pandemic when hospitals were overwhelmed."

Department of Health officials have assessed hospital capacity across the state weekly since Dec. 13, after New York Governor Hochul signed an executive order in November, allowing the Department of Health to order hospitals to stop performing in-hospital elective surgery? if the state identifies the facilities to be in high risk areas, or have a strained and limited bed capacity.

According to the release by the DoH, criteria that the organization uses to identify high-risk regions includes, "low current regional bed capacity with 90 percent or more beds occupied based on the previous 7-day average; or 85-90% occupancy rate based on the previous 7-day average and a new COVID-19 hospital admission rate for the region (previous 7-day average per 100,000 population) greater than 4 percent."
