Horseheads School District Voters Approve Capital Improvement Project

HORSEHEADS, NY (WENY) -- Voters in the Horseheads Central School District voted to approve the second major project in the district's 'Horseheads 2030' plan.
The capital improvement project vote passed, with 621 yes votes to 410 no votes. The second project, with a price tag of $122,254,993, aims to provide improvements to facilities within the district. The first project under the plan focused on improvements to the High School and Middle/Intermediate School, which included a multi-purpose stadium. The second project includes additions and improvements to Big Flats, Gardner Road and Ridge Road elementary schools. The use of the Center Street school for students will be phased out.
Schools across the district will also see renovations to gymnasiums, as well as preparing district buildings for updated heating, ventilating and cooling controls. Locker rooms and music storage will also be added at the stadium at the high school.
The project is primarily funded through the New York State Building Act covering 82% of eligible costs. The remainder of the project is paid for using funds from existing district resources ($15,000,000) and Capital Reserve funds ($10,000,000). The district estimates the estimated tax increase will be an additional $108 a year for the average residence valued at $100,000. District officials say the increase will be phased in over a four-year period, beginning in 2023.
