ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) - Elmira College was penalized by the NCAA on Friday in an infractions decision which found that EC gave merit-based scholarships to student-athletes at a disproportionately higher rate than non-student-athletes. The NCAA decision added that Elmira did not give adequate financial aid rules to athletics and financial aid personnel. EC's former Vice President of Enrollment Management didn't cooperate in the investigation.

Interim Director of Athletics, Rhonda Faunce released a statement on Friday addressing the decision saying "The College has been cooperating with the NCAA and the Committee throughout the process. While this mistake is resulting in a major violation and a "failure to monitor" finding, we are extremely thankful the NCAA has accepted our suggested penalties, we do not need to pursue any individual reinstatement, and no individual teams are required to vacate contests."

The NCAA faulted Elmira for not monitoring the former Vice President of Enrollment Management's Process of awarding financial aid. The direct oversight of this role as well as other financial-related rules is one of the corrective measures the NCAA has prescribed. Elmira also faces two years of probation.
