ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY)- A free summer program for kids centered around gardening is being offered at the Ernie Davis Community center.

The Ernie Davis Community Center is part of the Elmira Opportunity Program. They offer a variety of new free summer activities for kids in grades three to nine, from art workshops to horseback riding, acting, and gardening.

The gardening program, Project Sew Seeds of Wonder is part of their garden stem club learning project. Kids also receive credit while developing a green thumb.

They grow vegetables in the garden and then distribute them to different organizations in the community such as programs that serve students and child care centers.

The program coordinator explains they aim to teach kids healthy living practices.

"It teaches responsibility, It teaches sustainable living, it teaches them how to plant seedlings we plant the seedlings into the vegetable beds and then we harvest the vegetables and distribute them in the community so it's teaching a sustainable lifestyle and it's also promoting a healthy lifestyle a healthy eating lifestyle,” Chalanda Graham said.

Program Sew goes through mid-October. They still have space for kids to register for this program and many of their other workshops, including acting, and horseback riding
