BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WENY) – Governor Andrew Cuomo announced Tuesday the state-run mass vaccination site at Binghamton University will close as part of the state’s ongoing efforts to downscale large vaccination sites and focus on localized efforts.

Binghamton University’s site, along with sites at Aviation Mall in Queensbury, Stony Brook Southampton and SUNY Orange, will cease operations July 26. Last month, the mass vaccination site at Corning Community College closed as part of the same downscaling efforts.

New York State says it will “evaluate the remaining mass vaccination sites to determine future necessity as part of the strategic downscale based on demand, proximity to other vaccination sites, and other locally focused efforts”. It will also partner with local stakeholders, community members and partners to target zip codes with low vaccination rates.

"The COVID vaccine is the greatest tool we have in our fight against the virus. It is free, effective, and easily accessible throughout the State of New York," Governor Cuomo said. "With this accessibility comes the state's responsibility to target and shift resources to areas with the lowest vaccination rates. Downscaling state sites is necessary to redirect these resources, but it does not mean that you should not get your vaccine if you haven't already."

According to the state’s vaccine tracker, 56% of New York’s total population is fully vaccinated.
