ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- It's known for celebrating the holiday season, no matter the time of year. Elmira's Christmas House announced Thursday night, they will be shutting its doors after 39 years.

"I think I've always known the definition of bittersweet, but I've never had to live it before. So its a happy, sad time for us," says Julie Delgrosso, owner of The Christmas House.

The Christmas House will shut its doors for good after its 39th season in business this year. Owners, Julie and Mark Delgrosso have been running the business for 28 of those years, and say its time for a new chapter.

"We're no longer spring chickens, is what my husband said last night. I told him I still was, but he's not. We just want to make sure that we have some retirement time together, where we can go on adventures and travel," says Delgrosso.

Delgrosso says she and her husband have been talking about closing for a few years now, and even considered closing in 2020 due to the pandemic, but ended up having a successful year.

"Business is good here, we're both healthy. So there was no real reason, except our age and it was time to start thinking in that direction. Every year we talked about it. I had a reason to stay one more year, and then one more year, and then one more year, and so finally we decided, well we are still healthy and well this would be the time to make that decision to do that," says Delgrosso.

An official closing date has not been decided just yet, but Delgrosso says sometime around mid January of 2022.

"We'll be here right through January like we normally are. Our sale won't actually start until November. But we're in the final season mode, so that people know that if there's special collection, they have or special people they buy for, that this will be the time to start coming in and looking at things," says Delgrosso.

The owners also plan on liquidating everything, and will also be looking for charitable groups to help.

Delgrosso added, "Hopefully we're going to do a lot of good with what's left over. I can't take it all home with me."

The building, an 1894 Queen Victorian mansion, is being sold to Jim Capriotti of Capriotti Properties.
