Elmira Police Chief Kane to retire

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) – Elmira Police have confirmed to WENY News that Chief Joseph Kane plans to retire.
Chief Kane was first sworn in as the Elmira City Police Chief in January 2016. Before that, he was with the department for 20 years, including as captain of the detective bureau.
A resolution accepting Chief Kane’s retirement was unanimously accepted in April. He will retire this month.
The Elmira City Council must vote to approve the next chief. Currently, the Deputy Chief for Elmira is Deputy Chief Anthony Alvernaz.
