NTSB releases new details surrounding chopper crash that killed Guthrie doctor

WYOMING COUNTY, Pa (WENY) -- The National Transportation Safety Board has released new details regarding the death of a Guthrie doctor who died in a helicopter crash late last month.
According to the preliminary report released by the NTSB, Dr. Sanjay Kansara lost control of his Robinson R-44 while flying through a band of snow showers in a remote area in Wyoming County, Pennsylvania. He was on his way to the Bradford County airport in Towanda. Dr. According to the report, Kansara's Robinson R44 took off around 8:10 pm and was cruising at an altitude of about 3,000 feet. Dr. Kansara then made a slight right turn above Forkston Township, and entered a right, descending spiral until tracking data was lost shortly after 9 pm. The report says the helicopter collided with trees, and the wreckage caught fire. It remains unclear, if the snow showers caused Dr. Kansara's death. The NTSB says Kansara was not rated to fly under instrument conditions, and the helicopter was not approved to fly in such conditions. Kansara had received his pilot's license just a year ago.
According to the Allentown Morning Call newspaper, the Wyoming County Coroner said an autopsy showed Kansara died of blunt force trauma. A spokesperson for the NTSB told the Allentown Morning Call it could take 12 to 24 months for a final report to be released.
