Shine Ed New York to give 250 potted gardens away

Montour Falls, NY(WENY)-- Shine Ed NY has started a new program to give low-income seniors access to fresh, homegrown food.
The organization has 250 potted plants to give away for Schuyler, Steuben, and Chemung Counties,
Kent Gobin, a registered dietitian working with the organization says he hopes the program helps seniors learn how to eat healthier, while also learning to grow their own produce.
Stillman's Greenhouse is assisting in the growing of the plants.
Now the potted gardens will have lettuce and scallions, and each recipient will receive one of each plant.
"We are doing it with low-income seniors, and how they are able to eat better, shop better, get more nutrition," Gobin said, "Many of our seniors don't have the money to go out and give a lot for groceries, or be able to go."
