Rep. Fred Keller tours U.S.-Mexico border as migrant surge continues
WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Rep. Fred Keller (R-Pa.) is back in Washington on Thursday after visiting the U.S. Mexico border this week.
Keller was among a group of Republicans from the House Oversight and Reform Committee to make the trip this week. He calls the situation at the Southern border a “crisis.”
U.S. Customs and Border Protection apprehended more than 172,000 migrants in March alone – the highest number in nearly two decades.
Keller said officials on the ground are urging the Biden administration to reconsider its immigration and asylum policies.
“They actually said in 2019, when President Trump put in the “Remain in Mexico” policy, that was effective,” Keller said. “Getting more of the wall completed was effective.”
Comparatively, Southwest “border encounters” spiked by roughly 500% from March 2020 to March 2021, according to CBP numbers.
In February, President Biden reversed some Trump-era executive orders on immigration policy.
