The release of New York's virtual vaccine passport now sparking political debate nationwide of how to best reopen the country.

Many GOP lawmakers are already working to ban the technology in their state, fearing the app is a breach of privacy.

Most recently, Pennsylvania senators started drafting legislation to prohibit vaccine passports as a way to block people from routine activities.

Meanwhile some democrats say if implemented carefully the technology could allow for a safer reopening.

The Biden administration hasn't given much guidance on the technology but is reportedly considering the creation of federal guidelines for vaccine passports However representatives also shared that they have concerns of accessibility and security of the app.

Before rolling out the Excelsior Pass, New York ran two successful pilot demonstrations as well as a beta test of the service with thousands of participants.
