SCHUYLER COUNTY, N.Y. (WENY) -- Some of the top chefs across the region are competing in the first-ever virtual "Harvest Schuyler Farm-to-Table" Chef Competition, and you can help pick the winner!

Five of the region's top chefs are competing to make the most delicious and unique dishes by using farm goods that are produced in Schuyler County. The virtual competition is being held by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Schuyler County, Watkins Glen Area Chamber of Commerce and Schuyler County Farm Bureau.

"Our mission is to connect local foods and farms to the final destination, which would be the customers or the chefs," said Roger Ort, Local Foods, Agriculture and Horticulture Educator for Cornell Cooperative Extension of Schuyler County.

The five participating chefs were given a random box full of different items donated by 11 local farms. The items include, meat, dairy, vegetables, fruit, something sweet, like maple, honey or preserves and a liquid fruit-based condiment. The chefs were then given roughly a week and a half to create their own unique dish. The region's top chefs competing in this event include, Elin Dowd from Idlwilde Inn, Hilary Niver-Johnson- Finger Lakes Wine Flour, Lisa Shrout from Hidden Valley 4-H camp, Nicholas Thayer Nickel's Pit BBQ and Samira Baida from Ryan William Vineyard.

"It's really important to know where your food comes from and I think with an event like this, we actually try to educate the public that there's local farmers all around them. Its just getting to know them and each one has a unique story or a unique product and that's what I find really fun about this," said Ort.

From March 22 to April 4, folks can either vote in-person or online.

"You go to cceschuyler.org and then on that page, is everything including the videos, the photos, what each chef got in their boxes and where the chefs are from and what businesses they're affiliated with," said Ort.

From there you will be asked to choose the most creative dish, the dish you would like to try the most and the dish that was the best presentation. If you don't want to vote online, you can vote in-person by using your smart phone at the Watkins Glen Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center.

CCE Schuyler, Watkins Glen Area Chamber of Commerce and the Schuyler County Farm Bureau are hoping to hold the event in-person next year.
