How to avoid having your pipes freeze in cold weather
HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (WENY) -- The Twin Tiers are expected to see freezing temperatures for a majority of the week, and with freezing temperatures, comes the potential for frozen pipes.
Frozen pipes during extremely cold temperatures can be costly, and that's why the Horseheads Do It Center is reminding homeowners to take steps to prevent your pipes from freezing.
"Putting a small heater in where the pipes are to kind of bring the temperature up. If you think you're going to freeze overnight, like we did last night maybe a trickle on the faucet," said Max Bernhard, Sales Associate at Horseheads Do It Center.
Experts say keeping a trickle of water running on your faucet throughout the night, in either your bathroom or kitchen sink can help prevent your pipes from freezing.
Bernhard added, "If not, heat tape on the pipes, putting a heater element right on the pipe to run the length of the pipe."
If your pipes do freeze, experts say all of the sinks in your home will have no water flow, and sometimes even your washing machine.
"You can call a plumber, he's probably just going to recommend putting a heater down there and bringing the heat up and let it thaw out for several hours and see what happens from there. If there are any further issues, I would give him a call again, and say look, not working again," said Bernhard.
The Horseheads Do It Center says you can also call its rental department, to see if there are any rental heaters available.
"I would inspect the pipes, make sure if they're copper, CPVC or PVC, make sure they're not expanded or cracked, because if they're when the water pressure starts again, you might have a little flooding issue," said Bernhard.
The Horseheads Do It Center says if your pipes are frozen and you don't do anything to fix them, it can lead to bigger problems, like broken pipes which could be costly.
"You're looking at water damage, restoration damage, getting someone like Servpro or somebody to come in and do restoration, if it does get severe enough," said Bernhard.
