EPD: Police officer assaulted in 'unprovoked attack'

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- An Elmira Police officer was allegedly attacked and punched in the face by a man on the Southside on Wednesday afternoon.
Police say they responded to the Family Dollar on West Chemung Place around 2 o'clock for reports of a man with a gun.
Officers say they stopped a man nearby after being given a description of the person who reportedly had a weapon. EPD says after the person was determined to not have any weapons on him, he was released and began to walk away.
That's when police say the man, 37-year-old Terron Mims, started walking back towards the officers, and punched one of them in the face. Police say it was an unprovoked attack.
Officers say Mims tried to run away -- but he was taken into custody after a brief chase. Mims was charged with Assault 2nd, a felony.
