(WENY) -- With many in the Southern Tier losing their jobs in the coal industry, some help is on the way.
According to a release-- Friday, Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer and New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand announced over $830,000 in aid being given through the Appalachian Regional Commission.
The funding will be used to revitalize broadband in the Southern Tier's coal-impacted communities.
Specifically, Southern Tier West is getting more than $426,000 for a broadband project in Allegany county and Tompkins County Area Development will get a little over $404,000 for a fiber broadband trunk from Ithaca to the recently retired Cayuga coal plant in Lansing-- which is the site of a proposed high capacity data center focusing on artificial intelligence and machine learning.
