Ithaca joins over 425 other cities in women's march Saturday

Today the city of Ithaca joined over 425 other cities across the country in hosting a women's march. The rally was held to honor the legacy of Ruth Bader Ginsburg and protest President Trump's conservative Supreme court nomination Amy Coney Barrett. Today's movement was organized through the same non-profit that cultivated the historic women's rally in 2016, directly called Women's March.
The march began near Ruth Bader Ginsburg's old college dorm at Cornell and concluded at the steps of the Tompkins County courthouse to symbolize her journey from campus to the courts.
Feminists from all over Ithaca came out to make sure their voice was heard. "It's incredible how easily something can be overturned. Especially RBG fought so hard for our rights and just knowing that it's possible for someone to kind of come into the Supreme Court and overturn all of the things we worked so hard for is a little disconcerting. So I just want to make that sure I'm out here and representing all women and the respect for their bodies and their choices," said activist Meagan Myrick.
During the rally on the courthouse steps, speakers shared their ties to feminism and the importance of making sure the fight for women's rights is an intersectional one.
"So the main point is to have women's voices be heard and that means all women... then recognizing the privilege that we have as white women. And that there's no point in advocating for women's rights if it leaves women of color behind again," march organizer Jana Hexter said.
To stay safe under COVID, participants of today's march wore masks and organizers offered a virtual rally to those who could not attend.
