ALBANY, N.Y. (WENY) – A new study names New York State as the most responsible state in fighting COVID-19.

According to the study, which was conducted by health care-based data group “The Truth About Insurance”, 53% of all adults in the state are wearing masks in public. Additionally, 30.1% of people are staying home when possible.

Regarding testing, the data says 18,176 COVID-19 tests are given per 100,000 New York State residents. The only state that has conducted more coronavirus tests per capita than New York is Rhode Island.

In the spring, New York State was the epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic, with New York City seeing the most cases. “But,” the study reads, “the state took and is taking the fight against the novel coronavirus very seriously”.

The study also said New York State was in a “good spot” to fight back against the virus; there are 375 physicians for every 100,000 residents and only 6.6% of New Yorkers are uninsured.

"The last 137 days have been hell for New York as we were the epicenter of this pandemic,” said Governor Andrew Cuomo. “However, New Yorkers stood as one, acted responsibly and - as many other states in this nation are now grappling with new spikes of this insidious virus - the beast, for now, has been brought to bay in this state... We've used data and science to drive this fight and fuel our re-opening strategy, but make no mistake, this distinction is shared by every single New Yorker who did the right thing these last months, ignored the politics, socially distanced and wore a mask.

"Together, we climbed this terrible mountain and came down on the other side, but we can't stop now. We must remain disciplined and we must remain New York Tough. We've come too far to go back to where we were."

In comparison, the most irresponsible state in the fight against COVID-19 was South Carolina; there only 37% of adults are wearing masks in public, 18.3% are staying home when possible and just 6,259 COVID-19 tests have been given per 100,000 residents.
