BURDETT N.Y. (WENY) — Wineries on the Seneca Lake Wine Trail are open once again and customers can now enjoy indoor and outdoor tastings. Like many other businesses, winery owners had to adapt to New York States guidelines.

Jeffrey Dill, owner of J.R. Dill Winery, is making sure his customers can enjoy their wine safely by sanitizing all of the tables, chairs and doors.

"Yeah, New York State came down, I mean it's pages and pages of documents and stuff that we look through too, but it's the same thing you always hear. Make sure there's 6 foot spacing, employees are always wearing masks, we're always sanitizing every single table, everything touched, high touch surfaces things of that nature," Dill said.

Dill says they've changed the way they do their tastings. Instead of having multiple servers at the bar, one employee will serve at a time and everything is wiped down at the end of their shift.

"We've changed our cleaning, I mean we use a high temperature dishwasher that goes over 180 degrees to kill anything, but we do flights now. So they get every single taste in an individual glass. It's a little more cleaning but it's well worth it, it's more safe," Dill said.

Instead of sanitizing their glasses, some wineries are including the cost of a glass in their tasting fee. Glenn Allen, co-owner of Damiani Wine Cellars, is offering a few different options so customers can take home a wine glass of their choosing.

"The customer, we now give the glass to. So part of their tasting fee includes keeping their stem wear. We also have a flight pre-set so they have the choice of a red flight, a mixed flight or an all white flight," Allen said.

Allen says he's seen an uptick in business in just one day and many customers who look forward visiting wineries every year are easily adapting to the restrictions. Some people, like Joe Stagliano, are taking advantage of the reopening to celebrate and finalize the details for his wedding.

"Oh for sure, I mean this is our final stages of planning our wedding, we're very excited and we love the finger lakes. We're from New Jersey, so this is like our mini vacation we try to do a few times a year," Stagliano said.
