Fugitive arrested in Corning

CORNING, N.Y. (WENY) -- A wanted fugitive is behind bars in Chemung County Jail after an investigation by the New York State Parole and U.S. Marshals.
Members of the Corning Police Department, U.S. Marshals, NYS Parole, and New York State Police captured Christian J. Smith, 31, yesterday around 4 p.m. from a residence on the 100 block of Chestnut Street in the City of Corning where he was hiding.
According to a release, Smith is a parole absconder with a lengthy criminal history.
Police and marshals say they attempted to negotiate with a woman of the Chestnut Street residence, but she refused to cooperate and reportedly obstructed the efforts of officers multiple times.
Upon gaining entrance to the residence, officials say they found Smith hiding in a bedroom with small children.
Smith was taken into custody without resistance. He was transported to the Chemung County Jail and booked in as a parole violator.
The investigation is ongoing. According to a release, charges are possible for the female resident.
