Local cafe donates meals with help from the community amid COVID-19 pandemic

BIG FLATS, N.Y. (WENY) -- It has been almost two weeks since New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo ordered all restaurants statewide to shut down, in order to stop the spread of COVID-19. Restaurants are only allowing customers to do take-out or delivery. However, for one local restaurant they're going above and beyond with help from the community.
Sweet-N-Saucy Cafe is taking a different path than usual. They're cooking and preparing meals to those in need with no charge, and they say it's all with support from the community.
"People want to just keep donating, and everyday I am just so surprised by all the response from the community, its just been so nice," says Sarah Lyon, the owner of Sweet-N-Saucy.
Lyon says, it all began after a friend donated money on behalf of a loved one who had passed away and wanted to do something nice.
"I put it out there on Facbeook and then one person called after that, and said they wanted to join in. Then it just grew from there and everyday we just get calls, upon calls. I've even received donations in the mail. People just want to keep donating and everyday I am just so surprised by all the response from the community, its just been so nice," says Lyon.
Since last Monday, Lyon has received several donations, and has cooked and prepared over 100 meals with help from one of her colleagues.
"We've been able to cover almost everybody when they've called, or we're able to do it the next day. I donate, I don't like to say no. So you know, if we run out then I usually am able to still spend it on behalf of Sweet-N-Saucy," says Lyon.
The donated meals are offered Monday through Friday and are featured as a daily special. Some of the previous meals include, Jambalaya over rice, Pierogie Casserole, Salisbury Steak with gravy and mashed potatoes, and several other delicious dinners.
