Uber suspending shared rides in U.S. and Canada
(WENY) - Uber has just announced it is suspending shared rides in the U.S. and Canada in hopes to prevent the spread of the novel Coronavirus.
In a statement, Senior Vice President of Uber Rides and Platform Andrew Macdonald said "our goal is to help flatten the curve of community spread in the cities we serve." He goes onto say "we remain in close contact with local leaders and will continue to work with them to discourage non-essential travel."
The UberPool option offers lower prices for passengers who share a car with other people. This option is now unavailable on the app. Uber riders will see a message in the app notifying them to "travel only when necessary."
The number of cases in the U.S.currently stands at nearly 4,500 with 87 deaths. As of today, Lyft is still offering shared rides.
