Pennsylvania State Trooper Shot in Tioga County, PA
UPDATE (7:55 a.m., 12/11/2019) Pennsylvania State Police are still on scene at the home in Nelson Township. A trooper says they expect the road to be shut down for at least another three hours.
UPDATE (9:15 p.m.) According to the Pennsylvania State Police, the Trooper that was shot did not require surgery. He is currently receiving treatment for his injuries and is in stable condition. As of 9:15 p.m., the situation regarding the barricaded shooting suspect appears to still be ongoing.
UPDATE (8:30 p.m.) The road leading to the home where the shooting happened is still blocked off as of 8:30 PM. Ambulances, fire trucks and emergency personnel are standing by. WENY News will update this story as it develops.
UPDATE (4:45 p.m.) Pennsylvania State Police have provided more information regarding the incident in which one trooper was shot and another was injured.
According to police, just before noon Tuesday, three troopers responded to a home on Barney Hill Road for a welfare check.
Troopers say a caller who has regular contact with the resident there indicated they have not been able to contact the person for a couple weeks. Upon arrival, troopers reportedly announced themselves and attempted to see if anyone was in the home.
After no response, troopers entered the home through an unlocked door and announced their presence again. It was then that someone shot at the troopers, hitting one of them. All three of the troopers retreated, requested backup and secured the scene.
The trooper who was shot was airlifted from the scene and is currently in stable condition at the hospital. Another trooper sustained an injury to the leg, was treated and released.
Police are still on scene and troopers say this is an active situation. The gunman is reportedly still barricaded inside.
UPDATE (3:25 p.m.) According to Pennsylvania State Police, the trooper who was shot was conscious and alert before undergoing surgery. Another trooper at the scene is being treated for a possible broken leg, which they sustained while seeking cover from gunfire.
The gunman remains barricaded.
UPDATE (3:10 p.m.) WENY's on-scene crew says an Incident Management Unit has arrived on scene. Police still have Barney Hill Road blocked off.
UPDATE (2:05 p.m.) Williamson High School in Tioga Township, which is approximately 16 miles away from were the incident took place, has also been placed in "secure mode".
School officials say "secure mode" means the building has been secured as a safety precaution, and all faculty and students will remain inside the building.
A Parent Link will be issued when the secure mode is lifted.
UPDATE (2:00 p.m.) According to the school's Facebook page, Clark Wood Elementary in Elkland has been placed in "secure mode" due to the situation on Barney Hill Road.
Officials ask that no one visit the school unless it's an emergency.
ELKLAND, PA (WENY) -- WENY News is working to investigate reports of a police incident happening in Elkland, in Tioga County.
According to Pennsylvania State Police, the trooper was shot around 12:30 this afternoon while performing a welfare check at a home on Barney Hill Road. The injured trooper has been airlifted to a local hospital; his condition is unknown.
Details are limited at this time; a WENY News crew is working to gather information at the scene. Multiple law enforcement vehicles, as well as an ambulance are in the area of Barney Hill Road.
