TIOGA COUNTY, PA (WENY) -- Police in the Northern Tier are warning of a scam that tries to make people believe they have a warrant out for their arrest -- and they can sort it all out, if they pay up.

The Tioga County Sheriff's Office says scammers are pretending to be with Sheriff's Office in different parts of the Keystone State. The scammers are then identifying themselves as deputies, and they are telling victims that they missed jury duty, or failed to appear, or even have an unpaid summons. The scammers will try and get the victim to pay via money order or gift card.

The *real* Tioga County Sheriff's Office says they would never ask for this type of payment for a citation. If you have any information regarding this scam -- you should call 570-724-3491

Original warning from Tioga County Sheriff Frank Levindoski:

Scam ALERT!!!

"Scammers" pretending to be with the Sheriff's Office in certain areas of the State are calling residents and asking for money.

The callers, identifying themselves as a ranking Deputy, are telling residents that they have an outstanding issue — jury duty, failure to appear as an expert witness or an unpaid summons — and asking them to provide money orders and gift cards in order to deal with a warrant.

Do not provide any money or personal information to the callers. The Sheriff's Office would not ask for this type of payment or information if they were calling about a citation.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Sheriff's Office at 570-724-3491.
