Early Voting Set to Begin
ELMIRA, NY (WENY) -- It's that time of year again. No, were not talking about the holidays, we're talking about voting and if you live in New York state you can cast your ballot early.
Earlier this year, New York State passed legislation to allow for early voting to take place across the state. Supporters say it will create more opportunities for people to utilize their right to vote and help alleviate the pressure of voting on Election Day if you're too busy.
"Early voting has been pushed by some of the legislature for quite a few years, and what it does is that it provides the voter with more opportunity to vote. Rather than doing absentee ballots or having to be boxed in on election day. Sometimes people are so busy they can't get to the polls on Election Day. This allows the voter to be able to vote early and have more opportunity to vote," says Cindy Emmer, Democratic Elections Commissioner for the Chemung Board of Elections.
We also spoke with Emmer about how someone can use early voting.
"The only requirement is that you must be a registered voter, you had to have been registered prior to October 11th to vote in this election. So, all you do is come down to the board of elections, and this is where our polling site will be for early voting. You don't need an appointment, you just walk in during the hours of early voting," says Emmer.
Also, we spoke with Emmer about what the difference is between early voting and absentee voting.
"Absentee voting is for people who are not going to be in the county on Election Day, and you apply for one, fill out the form, and you fill out the ballot. The ballots for absentee voters are counted for 10 days after the election. With early voting, it allows you to actually come down and vote on the machine, scan your ballot into the machine. Early voting votes will be counted on election night along with all the other votes."
Below will be the times and dates for early voting for Chemung County, but to find out more about your county and how you can vote early Emmer says to contact your local Board of Elections.
