HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (WENY) -- On Thursday, the Elcor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center official opened their new state of the art gymnasium facility in Horseheads.

The new gymnasium, which is located on Colonial Drive,, will serve as the center of operations for physical,, occupational and speech therapy. Beforehand, Elcor had several small gyms for each field of therapy on its campus, but this new gym will consolidate everything into one centralized facility.

Elcor is the region's largest provider for care such as short-term rehabilitation, long term care and care for Alzheimer's and dementia patients.

Officials say the facility's main goal is to make sure people are as comfortable as possible during treatment, and complete treatment as quickly as possible.

"Our main goal is to get people back home after an incident, or something that sent them to the hospital for a long period of time," said Director of Rehabilitation Jeremiah Kane, "so they can enjoy the golden years at home...That's our main goal -- is to make sure people go home and stay there for a long time."

Elcor originally opened in 1965 with a 65-bed nursing facility. Today, the campus can serve up to 305 patients.
