Charnetski trial goes through accident reconstruction

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- The Caden Charnetski bench trial continued with its fifth day as only one expert with the New York State Police (NYSP) took the stand. Both sides went through data collected during the accident reconstruction process.
New York State Police investigator, David Bly was at the scene of the accident last July. His job was was to reconstruct the crash. According to Bly, when he arrived at the scene, he didn't think it was a high speed crash. After going through pictures of the accident, Bly says his data shows Matthew Matteson was thrown 62 feet from the bike, and Harolyn Matteson was thrown 65 feet. With the calculated speed of their motorcycle ranging from 25 to 30.7 miles per hour (MPH) at the moment of impact.
Bly went on to say, seconds before the crash, Charnetski turned without stopping. This gave the Mattesons no time to react on their motorcycle before the collision. Bly says there were no breaking signs from the motorcycle, which is why there were no skid marks. At the moment the two vehicles hit, Bly says his data shows Charnetski was going 14.9 MPH.
The bench trial will resume on Friday. According to Judge Richard Rich, he expects the trial to conclude sometime early next week. Stick with WENY News both on-air and online as this case develops.
