ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- The New York State Department of Corrections and Community Service says an inmate at the Elmira Correctional Facility was pronounced dead on Friday night.

Details are very limited at this time, but in a statement from NYSDOCCS, the inmate was identified as 50-year-old Victor Mercedes. He was pronounced dead at 9:30 Friday night. Mercedes was serving a 66-year to life sentence after being convicted in New York City back in 1995. He was serving time for several charges including murder, attempted murder, and conspiracy.

The official cause of death is still pending. The cause will be investigated and determined by the Chemung County Medical Examiner's Office. NYSDOCCS says the medical examiner will be the final authority as to whether or not those results are released, and to who.

NYSDOCCS says there was an incident involving another inmate earlier that day. The same day that Mercedes was pronounced dead. But details surrounding that incident have not been released. The incident in question is now under investigation by NYSDOCCS, the Office of Special Investigations, the New York State Police, and the Chemung County Coroner's Office.

This is a developing story, and WENY News will bring you any updates as we work to learn more.
