UPDATE (11:00 p.m.):   State police across New York are mourning the loss of of one of their own after a trooper was shot and killed in the line of duty early Monday morning. 29-year-old Nicholas Clark is being remembered as a dedicated member of the state police force and local stand-out athlete. 

During a news conference Monday afternoon Governor Andrew Cuomo offered condolences to Trooper Clark's family, emphasizing his sacrifice for public service. 

"To the Clark Family; to his mother, his father, his brother - we hope you find peace in this senseless act of violence," says Governor Cuomo. 

Trooper Clark was taken to a hospital in Binghamton after the incident. New York State Police held a procession, transporting Trooper Clark from Owego to Hornell. 


UPDATE (3:10 p.m.): Alfred University has released a statement regarding the loss of Trooper Nicholas Clark, who attended school there until 2011: 

President of the university Mark Zupan said, 

"The entire Alfred University community is reeling from the news that Nicholas Clark '11 was killed early this morning in the line of duty as a New York State trooper. This tragedy touches us in so many ways.   

Nick was a wonderful young man, highly regarded for his community spirit, great heart, and unquestionable skills as a football player.  Whenever the Saxons got into a tough situation on the football field, the coaches sent in Nick Clark to get the job done."

Paul Vecchio, the athletic director, said, "Nick was one of the all-time greats that has ever worn the Purple & Gold and did so in a way that left a legacy that will never be forgotten. Our heartfelt prayers and supportive thoughts go out to his family, including his mother Theresa Gunn, an Alfred University professor and currently the Faculty Athletic Representative for the Division of Athletics. Nick’s passion was to serve others and this led him to his position as a NYS Trooper. His passing underscores the incredible sacrifices and risks that these brave men and women make everyday to keep our communities safe.”

ERWIN, N.Y. (WENY) – New York State Police have identified the trooper who was shot and killed responding to a reported domestic dispute as 29-year-old Nicholas Clark.

According to police, at approximately 3:30 a.m., a 911 call regarding a suicidal individual was made. State Police, Steuben County Sheriff's deputies, and the Corning Police Department responded to a home on Welch Road in the Town of Erwin.

Crisis negotiators were on scene and tried to make contact, but were unable. Police say at some point during the exchange, Clark was shot and killed.

The shooter, who is also reportedly dead, was identified as 43-year-old Steven Kiley, who lived at the Welch Road residence.

WENY has learned that Kiley was the principal of the Bradford Central School District in Bradford, New York. 

Police say Clark was a lifelong Steuben County resident who graduated from Cansiteo-Greenwood High School. He joined the state police stationed in Bath in 2017, and was a state officer since 2015.

He was also known as a very successful athlete in both wrestling and football and at one point, tried out for the Buffalo Bills.

Governor Andrew Cuomo delivered a statement while at the press conference and offered his condolences to Clark's family, friends and colleagues.

“A situation like this makes no sense,” said Cuomo. “A 29-year-old with his whole life ahead of him...he just wanted to do good things.”

To Clark's family and friends, Cuomo said, “We hope you find peace in this senseless act of violence.”

Nicholas is survived by his mother, father and brother.
