Hoyt Sentenced To 9 years in Prison For Attempted Murder of 7-month-old Daughter

Elmira, N.Y. (WENY)-- The Sayre teenager who left her baby for dead in a trash bag in August will spend the next 9 years in state prison.
Harriette Hoyt plead guilty to the attempted murder of her 7-month-old daughter in exchange for the 9-year prison sentence. Back in August, Hoyt left her child outside of a home on Walnut Street in the bushes, inside a trash bag. The child miraculously survived after spending three days outside before being found. The baby suffered severe skin rashes and dehydration. Hoyt was taken in by police shortly after the baby was found.
During the sentencing hearing, Chemung County Court Judge Richard Rich said although he would agree to the terms of a plea deal, life imprisonment would be a just sentence for this crime. District Attorney Weeden Wetmore says the 9-year prison sentence is fair because of Hoyt's lack of criminal history and need of mental health treatment. Hoyt's attorney, John Brennan, says his client is extremely sorry for her actions, and there is no excuse. A psychologist who evaluated Hoyt diagnosed her with Postpartum Depression and Postpartum Psychosis. Brennan says despite the diagnosis, his client agrees there is no excuse for her actions.
