Steuben County holds annual opioid and substance abuse forum

CORNING, N.Y. (WENY) -- The Steuben County community came together for the third annual "Community Opioid and Substance Abuse Forum".
The forum covered opioid and substance abuse problems in the area, especially in grade school students.
Representatives from various support groups were on hand to spread awareness of their programs for addicts and caregivers.
The goal of the forum is to not only raise awareness of the problems -- but to help to the people who need it most.
"We're trying to do our best here with the county and, most importantly, our community partners to spread the message that there is help out there," said county manager, Jack Wheeler. "Not just for people who are addicted, but also for the caregivers that are in their lives."
According to the Steuben County Coroner's Office, the number of opioid related fatalities tripled between 2011 and 2016.
"Our hopes tonight is to get the information out to folks that need the help," said Steuben County Sheriff, James Allard. "So that people realize that they are not alone and that they can find the help they need here in Steuben County, or other places."
