NICHOLS, N.Y. (WENY) --  Exit 62 in Nichols is seeing a lot more traffic than usual today, after crews shut down Interstate 86 between Nichols and Lounsberry.

Officials say the overnight storms caused damage to the highway after flooding eroded underneath the bridge over Wappasening Creek, making it unsafe to drive on.

Currently the highway is closed both east and westbound.

The detour has created a backup of traffic and long delays.

It's unclear how long the stretch of highway will be closed and what officials are doing to repair the bridge.

But for now, if you're going that way, make sure to plan extra time into your travels.
