TIOGA COUNTY, PA. (WENY) -- Flags will be flown at half-staff in Tioga County, Pennsylvania in honor of a volunteer firefighter who recently died in the line of duty.
Firefighter and rescue captain Roger Lathrop died following a medical emergency during a mutual aid response to a structure fire in Sullivan Township Thursday morning.
Lathrop was a member of the Big Elm Volunteer Fire Company in Daggett, which serves the townships of Jackson, Wells, and Rutland, along with the borough of Roseville in Tioga County.
Gov. Josh Shapiro ordered all public buildings and grounds as well as state facilities, in Tioga County, to fly flags at half-staff from Friday until sunset on the day Lathrop is buried, according to the Big Elm Fire Department.
Any resident of Pennsylvania is invited to participate.
"Roger was an integral part of our department and community and loved by all," the Big Elm Fire Department wrote in a statement released Thursday.
They are asking the community to keep the members of the department and Lathrop's family in their thoughts at this time.
