According to the Ovid Fire Chief, the fire was caused by a charging device that was plugged in in an upstairs apartment. Everyone was able to escape safely, and on one was hurt.
11AM UPDATE: A joint press conference will be held at 2PM with the Seneca County Sheriff's Office and Ovid Fire Department. WENY News will stream the press conference on its Facebook page.
According to the Seneca County Sheriff's Office, the fire started in an apartment above the Big M grocery store. The fire became too overwhelming for firefighters to contain, and quickly spread to neighboring buildings.
The Ovid Fire Department says the buildings on the block, from the Big M to the Italian Kitchen, were destroyed and needed to be demolished. Main Street in Ovid from the Community Bank to the Library is currently shut down.
Neighboring businesses are stepping up to help those affected by the fire; the Ovid Community Thrift Store is open from 9AM to noon on Wednesday, giving away free clothing and other items needed by those affected by the fires.
The Ovid Big M posted a message to the community to its Facebook page, thanking the community for its thoughts and prayers.

OVID, N.Y. (WENY) -- Numerous fire departments were on the scene Tuesday night of a massive fire that jumped from building to building in the Village of Ovid.
According to ABC affiliate 13WHAM, the fire started around 6:30 p.m. at an apartment above the Big M on Main St. It quickly spread through the building, causing it to collapse. The Uptown Diner next door also caught fire and collapsed.
At last check, the fire was still spreading and threatening other buildings as well.
The Ovid Fire Department is asking everyone to avoid the Village at this time as they work to put out the blaze.
