No One Hurt in Large Morning Fire in Ithaca's Jungle

ITHACA, NY (WENY) -- No one was hurt in a large fire that broke out Wednesday morning in one of Ithaca's homeless encampments known as the "jungle."

According to the Ithaca Fire Department, crews were dispatched around 7:50AM Wednesday to an encampment fire behind Lowe's. When firefighters arrived, a two-story makeshift shelter was fully engulfed in flames.

Fire officials say it took about one hour to put out the fire and clear the scene. According to IFD, the makeshift shelter was not occupied when crews arrived, and there were no other occupants in the jungle at the time.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
