ELMIRA, NY (WENY) -- A bridge in Elmira will re-open to traffic Wednesday afternoon, six weeks after a fire forced it to close.
The city of Elmira announced Wednesday morning the Washington Avenue bridge over the Norfolk Southern railroad will reopen on Wednesday, December 18th at 1PM. The bridge was shut down after a fire underneath it the morning of October 30th.
According to the city, the state Department of Transportation, along with engineering consultants determined the bridge is safe to re-open to vehicles.
The fire under the Washington Avenue bridge was the second in the city in recent months; in July, a massive fire under a homeless encampment underneath the Clemens Center bridge resulted in the northbound land being closed for several months.
