Elmira City School District eyeing $139m Capitol Improvement Project that voters must approve
ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- The Elmira City School District will ask voters to approve a $139 million Capitol Improvement Project, according to the district. The school district says the project is necessary for essential repairs, replacements and upgrades.
The projects include upgrades to every school building in the district. Classrooms, athletic facilities and bus garage and maintenance buildings will all see improvements.
The plan will add no new taxes to school district residents. Elmira City School District expects New York to provide $119 million in aid, while the district will contribute $20 million to the project.
The school district will be hosting a public information session where community members can learn more about the project on Dec. 4 starting at 6 p.m. The meeting will be held at the District Offices on W. Washington Ave.
Voting will be held on Dec. 10th from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Elmira High School and Ernie Davis Academy. Absentee ballots are available, applications must be picked up at the Elmira City School District Administration Office.

- Library renovations
- Classroom updates
- Pool and Gym area reconfiguration
- Gym bleacher replacement
- Replace the lighting system in the theater

- Mechanical unit and electrical system replacements
- Upgrade exterior windows and doors
- Paint metal siding
- Restore masonry around the school
Ernie Davis Academy:
- Renovate some first floor classrooms
- Replace the roof on the cafeteria addition
- Reconstruct the tennis court
- Replace the gym bleachers and partition
- Replace and improve the lighting and sound system in the auditorium
- Restore masonry
- Improve storm drains
- Replace electric systems
Broadway Academy:
- Install building-wide cooling systems
- Renovate the cafeteria and kitchen
- Upgrade the gym
- Replace the carpet in the library
- Replace theatrical lighting and stage rigging
- Modernize the elevator
Broadway Elementary:
- Install building-wide cooling systems
- Improve classrooms in the F-Wing
- Upgrade the gym
- Improve the outdoor playground
- Resurface the courtyard
- Replace the sidewalk
- Restore masonry
Beecher Elementary:
- Replace the roof

- Replace tile flooring in the corridor
