Elmira City School District eyeing $139m Capitol Improvement Project that voters must approve

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- The Elmira City School District will ask voters to approve a $139 million Capitol Improvement Project, according to the district. The school district says the project is necessary for essential repairs, replacements and upgrades.

The projects include upgrades to every school building in the district. Classrooms, athletic facilities and bus garage and maintenance buildings will all see improvements.

The plan will add no new taxes to school district residents. Elmira City School District expects New York to provide $119 million in aid, while the district will contribute $20 million to the project.

The school district will be hosting a public information session where community members can learn more about the project on Dec. 4 starting at 6 p.m. The meeting will be held at the District Offices on W. Washington Ave.

Voting will be held on Dec. 10th from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Elmira High School and Ernie Davis Academy. Absentee ballots are available, applications must be picked up at the Elmira City School District Administration Office.
