BATH, N.Y. (WENY) -- The Bath man behind a 6 hour stand-off with multiple law enforcement agencies in the Village of Bath in August of 2023 was found guilty on numerous charges related to the incident Friday in Steuben County Court.
As WENY previously reported, police were called out to a home on Roosevelt Avenue in Bath for a domestic situation on Aug. 20, 2023. Larry Schoonover, a 51-year-old man, fired shots at the police, who returned fire. Neighbors who lived nearby had to be evacuated, and police brought in up-armored tactical vehicles and crisis negotiators.
Several hours after the standoff began, on August 21, Schoonover left his home and fired at close range on two New York State Troopers, according to the Steuben County District Attorney. He was shot in the leg after he raised a shotgun toward Troopers.
“This Defendant chose to shoot at, and attempt[ed] to kill 12 police officers, from the New York State Police, Bath Village Police Department and the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office as they put there lives at risk to protect his neighbors, and him, in residential neighborhood – and this verdict reflects the severity and scope of that conduct.” said Steuben County District Attorney Brooks Baker.
Schoonover was found guilty on 12 counts of Attempted Murder, 12 counts of Criminal Use of a Firearm, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, 5 counts of Reckless Endangerment, Assault and Endangering the Welfare of a Child.
Sentencing in the case is scheduled for Jan. 9, 2025. Schoonover is currently in the Steuben County Jail without bail.
