Substation Fire Cut Power to Thousands Across Chemung County for Hours

UPDATE 4:15 p.m. (11/7): According to NYSEG's outage tracker, the power is now back on for thousands of customers who went without for hours Thursday afternoon.


HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (WENY) -- Early Thursday afternoon thousands of customers in Chemung County lost power after a fire at an electrical substation.

According to Town and Country Fire Department, electrical gear at the Ridge Road substation off Kalem Circle in Horseheads caught on fire around 1 p.m. Power was cut to the substation and the fire has since been put out. The damage was contained to the unit that was on fire, and there is no additional damage to the substation.

As of 3 p.m., NYSEG is reporting 2,484 customers without power across Veteran, Horseheads, Village Catherine, Cayuta, Millport, Horseheads Township, Catlin Township, Erin Township.

At this time it is not clear what time power could be restored in these affected areas.
