NYSEG restoring gas and electric utilities to Woodlawn Court apartments in Elmira

UPDATE 7:40 P.M.  -- While the power is working to be restored, a resident of Woodlawn Court Apartments, Sara Kirkendall, spoke out about her experience as one of over 200 residents affected by the outage as it was happening.

"Well, my main concern is my son, who has autism. He also has an eating disorder, so it's hard because he only eats certain things that require the stove," said Kirkendall. "So, not being able to give him those things -- he actually went without dinner last night."

Kirkendall and many other residents say they were concerned about their food spoiling due to gas and electricity being turned off.

To try and help Woodlawn residents, The Food Bank of the Southern Tier and Meals on Wheels brought hot meals to the complex on Friday afternoon. They also brought perishables, blankets, and more.

Chemung County officials also helped connect people with resources. For example, requests for the replacement of food purchased with SNAP benefits were provided for people to fill out with help from officials on site. Information sheets from Catholic Charities were also given to people to forward them to the correct resources.

As of this writing, Kirkendall says the heat is still out at Woodlawn Court as well.

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- NYSEG confirmed to WENY News on Friday, November 1st that gas and electric utilities are being restored to Woodlawn Court Apartments in Elmira. The apartment complex, which is home to over 200 occupied apartments, had its gas and electric turned off the day before due to a debt of roughly $725,000.

Michael Abreu of All County Management said that still leaves a debt of roughly $356,000, an amount he said is comprised entirely of interest that accumulated on the debt that was just paid. Abreu said the company will continue to work to try to get that payment abated, and said the fight is not over yet with NYSEG.
