TIOGA COUNTY, P.A. (WENY) -- The deadline to apply for FEMA assistance is approaching for those in the region who were affected by Tropical Storm Debby in August. FEMA and Tioga County officials are still trying to let people know they have time to apply and should try to do so before Saturday, November 12.
After the remnants of Debby passed through the Twin Tiers, people were left with property damage, destruction to their homes, and more. The process of recovery has been long-lasting but local, state, and federal officials are encouraging affected residents to seek help wherever they can.
There are several ways for people to apply for FEMA assistance from now until November 12. One way is connecting face-to-face at the Tioga County Disaster Recovery Center at 146 Maple Street in Westfield. Another way is virtually by sending in documentation and applying on FEMA's website or through their app. Lastly, people are encouraged to call FEMA's helpline at 1-800-621-3362.
"This assistance is available for people who have insurance and people who don't have insurance, and also, this is money that we give to you to help you on the road to recovery," said Trey Paul, a media relations specialist with FEMA. "You do not return that money to us. I know there have been some rumors about us requiring that the money's paid back. This is the money we give to you and you keep it, so I want to be clear on that."
FEMA officials say in-person or over the phone are good options for people who may have any questions or are unsure if they qualify to receive aid. But, officials also say, it can't hurt to ask and check in if you have eligibility concerns and you should do so as soon as you are able.
"If they don't show up and apply, they'll never know, they'll never get the shot at being made whole," said Commissioner Shane Nickerson from Tioga County, Pennsylvania. "So I'm actually pleasantly surprised with FEMA that the people that they've sent to us has been such, such a blessing for our community."
For those who want to stop by the Tioga County Disaster Recovery Center, the regular hours of operation are 8:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M., Monday through Saturday.
However, on Election Day (November 5), the center will be closed. And, on Veteran's Day (November 11), their hours are limited and the center is only open from 10:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.
