ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) - It was a big day at the LECOM Events Center as the facility the facility held an official ribbon cutting for the Williams Toyota Turf Field.
The field was built in the rec arena at the LECOM Events Center and it will be able to host local sports teams, leagues, and community events all year. This opening is another piece of the recent changes at the facility after being renamed the LECOM Events Center and becoming the home of the Elmira Aviators, who are in their inaugural season in the NAHL.
Chemung County IDA Chairman, Mark Margeson says this is another step in the direction that the IDA wants to take the facility ever since they took over operations.
"We wanted to have a community facility, and the facility has been about hockey only so making a turf area opens it up to the rest of the community for events and activity," Margeson said. "We have a number of people in various soccer programs and lacrosse programs that travel to Binghamton an hour away for practice and events or tournaments. Now, we can have those activities and events here. the goal is the make this a community facility and that's why we put the turf in here."
Margeson added that if someone has an event or wants to talk about the opportunity to use the turf, he recommends you call the LECOM Events Center office, and they will network you to the right person to talk to.
